Total and extractable concentrations of some heavy metals in different land uses (Case study: Zanjanroud, Mianeh and Tarom)

Heavy metals in soil possess several key characteristics that significantly impact environmental health and safety. The purpose of this study was to determine the total concentration and distribution of extractable with DTPA of lead, zinc, copper, and nickel in various land uses, geographical locations, and depth variations. For the first depth (0-20 cm), lead, zinc, and copper showed the highest total and extractable concentrations. In the Zanjanrud plain, pastures demonstrated the highest total nickel concentration at the third depth (40-60 cm), while the middle plain of grape gardens also recorded the highest total nickel concentration at the third depth. In the Tarom region, the highest nickel concentration in pasture land was observed at a depth of 20-40 cm. The maximum nickel concentration extractable with DTPA across all three regions was found at a depth of 0-20 cm, with pasture, vineyard, and pasture land in Zanjanrud, Mianeh, and Tarom respectively. Based on a review of various sources (both domestic and international), it appears that the supply sources of lead, zinc, and copper in the soils of the three studied regions differ slightly from those of nickel. Human activities significantly contribute to the increased concentrations of lead, zinc, and copper, while natural conditions and parent materials play a more critical role in the concentration of nickel.
